Mike: Announced that the peace meeting was to take place after this meeting. If you are interested in attending future meetings or learning more about the Peace Committee, reach out to Mike.
Karl: Thanked the club for inviting him to present today his Pro Classification Talk.
Shannon B: Mentioned that she may have fractured her tailbone while roller skating. She announced also that her skating efforts have landed her on the roster for the Rose City Roller Derby team: “The Wreckers”.
Rick: Noted that he read the recent Rotary International Magazine and mentioned that there are a lot of VERY interesting articles in there about Peace efforts within Rotary. He said this was his favorite edition of this magazine he’s ever read and encouraged us all to sit down and read it.
Om: Gave thanks for Shannon and additional appreciation for all female past presidents for their service to the club. She encouraged all new members to look into participation on the board and committees.
Dan: Donated “Happy Bucks” since his parents are visiting from Maui for the first time since the beginning of COVID. He had considered trying to get them to come to the Rotary meeting but realized they would rather take the grandkids to the park. Dan also noted that after a long, difficult time at work, due to turnover, is finally rebounding as the Finance Department at the City hired its new Finance Manager! Additionally, it was announced at the recent Council Meeting that the City has Chosen our very own Jeff Kosmicki as the new full time Police Chief.
Judy: Gave kudos to the Interact Club for hanging in there during a difficult year and stayed active. She also mentioned that her husband had 2 knee replacements and is now back to riding. She hopes the Canadian border opens back up so she can visit her family.
Shannon K: Bragged on Om for her continuous efforts to bring new people to Rotary.
Joe: Wished a speedy recovery for Shannon Bs tailbone and also is excited for his year as President.
Denise: Congratulated Chief Kosmicki after a long and stressful 14 months as interim Police Chief with the City of Newberg.
Auggie: Announced that Ron Wolff reached out to him and announced that Rotodent will be providing the Foundation $16,000 this year.
~ Today’s Program: Pro Classification Talk with Karl Hughes ~
Karl Hughes has been a member in our Rotary Club for 12 years. He described himself as a “Low Key Member”. He has served in the club and participated in many fantastic ways, but likes to quietly serve. He appreciates being in Rotary because he enjoys being in service and meeting new people. Karl described himself also as a Printer and an IT Guy and currently owns and manages Allegra. His job is to facilitate his team members, who are really the ones who get things done.
Karl started out studying Physics at Oregon State University but always understood there was no money in that field. He loved learning and even had an explosive accident during his studies before he eventually moved up north to Portland State University. During this time he worked for AT&T, learning about and honing his skills with systems. He took this knowledge and skill with him along his professional life designing systems for insurance companies. He considers himself a “serial entrepreneur” an learned about business as he went. His longest professional stint was with a small software writing company he started with a small workspace and a great team. Business happened naturally for them and they served security firms, insurance companies, and even some military type clients.
Eventually, he moved on looking to invest in, own, and run a Print Shop. After hundreds of visits looking for the perfect situation, he found Allegra in Newberg and bought Allegra Printing. He was new to the area and realized he knew no one and had no way to market or make connections, leading him to join Rotary “by accident”. He joined the club and enjoyed everything but the “singing” which he pointed out has since been discontinued. He joined the club, met all sorts of great, welcoming people. He volunteered for the Pancake Breakfast first and had a great time working the sausage. Mike Caruso then showed up to Karl’s office and recruited him to fund raise for the Old Fashioned Festival. This turned out to be a lot of work but ended up pushing him to meet many great philantropists. This showed Karl how great our town is and how many kind and generous citizens are in this community of volunteers. He also has participated in the auction and loves how all of these big projects come together to do great things in the community. He urged new Rotarians to get into the thick of Rotary and volunteer or even just meet people. It is a lot of fun!
