Jim:  Mentioned that he will be out of town coming up.

Mike: Noted that 10 years ago the club became a Peacebuilder.  There are 302 worldwide and Laura helped design a new logo that they will be putting on shirts and hats for anyone who wants to order one.  The shirts will be $30 and the hats are about half that.  You will need to pre-order so ket Mike know if you want one.

Brandy: Missed some meetings as her and her family were travelling for Summer Vacation.

Amber: Announced the Summer youth entrepreneurial program – The Blueberry Project.  This is a project whereby youth can go pick blueberries and sell them.  For more information contact Amber or YCAP.

Auggie: Introduced his guest Kyla who works for Guild Mortgage.

Kyla: Mentioned she works for Guild Mortgage and she and her team are happy to help with any fundraising or marketing of service projects as they seek to give back to the community.

Kyle: Came last week and is glad to be back this week.

Karen: Introduced her guest Daniel.  Daniel is her son, works with her in real estate, and is planning to apply to become a member.

Daniel: Thanked everyone for having him.  He joked that he previously attended one of Shannon Buckmasters last meetings and had to come back to see if Joe is as good as Shannon was as president.

Laura: Announced that we heard from our Friends in Nepal that $45,000 was raised in our effort to help fund their medical response to COVID outbreaks.  52 Oxygen Concentrators were purchased and distributed in Nepal.  Thanks again to everyone who helped raise that awareness and to everyone who donated to that cause.

~ Today’s Program: Pro Classification Talk with Lynn Montoya Quinn ~

Lynn Montoya Quinn presented today via Zoom.  Lynn has been a member for 6-7 years and is the Scholarship Committee Chair.  She is the Director of the Portland Community College Newberg Center.

Lynn is a Northwest girl and was born in Ellensburg and grew up in Pullman, WA (home of the WSU Cougars).  In High School she finally moved down to Hood River, Oregon and went to the University of Oregon for a few years after high school until transferring to Seattle University where she graduated with a degree in Social work, Community Service, and Public Affairs.  She got a job working in a group home for children with disabilities and managed that group home for 6 or 7 years before moving to Arizona, getting her Master’s Degree in Education and taught at a Private Highschool there.  This is where her love for teaching was born.  She then took an opportunity to move back to Portland to be closer to family where she began working for Portland Community College.  She has worked both as a teacher and an administrator during her time at PCC.  She especially enjoyed working in programs that served students who had disabilities or were the first generation of their families to go to college.  She came to Newberg Center in 2014 to work as the Director.

Community Colleges offer a lot of opportunities for people seeking education below are some highlights Lynn provided about CCs:

  • Created in the 40s and 50s to provide better access to middle class people looking to advance in their education or socio-economic status.
  • unlike private and state schools, CCs do not have minimum requirements to enroll, meaning anyone can go there.
  • 17 community colleges in Oregon serving nearly 300,000 students each year.
  •  Prepare people for taking the GED, learning English as second Language, provide Career and Technical Training, or prepare for specific skills / work forces.
  • Many students take a few years of courses before transferring to Universities

At the Newberg Center:

  • Offers in person or online courses.
  • the Building is designed to be “Net-zero” meaning they are a green campus that seeks to generate as much energy as it uses.
  • Demographic breakdown is about half men and half women, slightly more ethnic diversity than Newberg as a whole.
  • Most of the students are under 24 years old, but actually also includes some high schoolers who are taking classes while still in High School.  Though they do serve more older, non-traditional students than typical colleges/universities.
  • Serves mostly students from Newberg, Dundee, Sherwood, but some students do travel to attend at the Newberg Center.
  • Saw a big shift towards online learning since COVID began.
  • Expected to have 35 different departments offering classes
