~ Today’s Program: Peace Trail Village with Leslie Murray and Melanie Spencer Mock ~

Melanie and Leslie came to tell us all about the Peace Trail Village at the North Valley Friends Church here in Newberg.  Many may have heard about this project, as it has become a topic of conversation here in Newberg on many levels.  There has been a lot of information spreading throughout the community, some of it accurate and some of it inaccurate.  They seek to do their best to get out and spread truth and intentions of the project to combat the disinformation.  This project is being done in collaboration with Providence with Newberg’s best interest at heart.  Their church is a Quaker community of pastors.  They will celebrate their 50th anniversary this fall, all the years being faithful to their mission and stewarding their resources.  They had about 26 acres originally and have done a lot with that property: the Church, a playground, ball fields, walking trails, a social service building, a duplex, and even sold a large portion at well below market value to a Christian School.  They lend their space to community events year round as well.  In Spring of 2021 they had put together plans for a small cottage cluster of 11 tiny homes that can serve as transitional housing for those coming out of Providence with medical issues and need housing stability for their recovery and to navigate their care.  Each is fully hooked up with its own Toilet, shower, sink, and bed.  In the center of this cluster there will be a gathering place for shared activities and meals.  They already have a couple homes that have been operational for some time and have served many people in need without issue.  Having a stable living situation allowed for these patients to recover and move on into permanent housing.  Every guest has a medical issue and they will do criminal history checks.  The churches policy would be to not allow anyone with current addiction issues or with histories of sex offences.  The vetting process will ensure that candidates will be good candidates for transition into permanent housing.

How to help?  Be a Positive Advocate by learning about the program and spreading the correct information.  If people want more information that you cannot help with, sending people to the Church or the website to get the correct facts.  Prayers and support is always welcome.  See the website here: https://northvalleyfriends.org/peace-trail-village/.
