~ Announcements ~
Auction Committee – We are now less than 3 months away and A LOT of planning goes into this project. So please consider joining the committee and helping the team build an amazing Auction. The Committee plans to be available meet after the club meetings to discuss progress. Please see Michelle and sign up to help out in some way. Also now is a good time to begin finding procurements (let Dan K know if you have any relevant connections you plan to reach out to). Every meeting will include opportunities to check in about the auction, sign up for a role, and hear updates from the Co-Chairs.
- The Event: The auction will be October 28, 2022 (SAVE THE DATE) at the Chehalem Cultural Center.
- The Theme: This is our 50th Annual Auction, so the Committee has chosen the 1950’s for the theme.
- Dan K’s GOLDEN TICKET CHALLENGE: Dan K Will be buying the very first of 100 Golden Tickets for Sale for $100. Any Rotarian who either contributes an auction item themselves or procures an item from a friend, family, or business will need to let Dan K know and their name will be entered into a drawing to WIN THAT GOLDEN TICKET!
Official Board Announcement – Karen Roberts has officially been approved by the board to serve as our new Vice President. Congrats and Thank You to Karen! Next year Wendy will be President and then the year after that Karen will serve as President.
Official Board Announcement – Scott Parker has officially been approved by the board to serve as Membership Chair! Congrats and Thank You to Scott!
Official Board Announcement – Leroy Benham has been approved to become an “Honorary Member”. He joined in over 40 years ago, was instrumental in the Guatemala Project and even sponsored a teacher to go serve villages in Guatemala, is a past president, and an amazing Rotarian.
Paul Harris Fellowships Announcement! Today we had the honor of recognizing our latest Paul Harris Fellow. This is in recognition of members who contributed at least $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation in the fiscal year. Today we celebrate Om Sukheenai who was awarded her Paul Harris Fellow +2 (which means she has contributed over $3,000!). These donations to the Rotary Foundation Annual Fund are critical in meeting District goals which results in twice as much District Grant Matches over the following year. Thanks Om!
Pancake Breakfast Wrap up – Please bring yard signs to the Club meetings to return them. We re-use them each year. Also please complete the survey for the Pancake Committee: Click here for that Survey.
~ Guests ~
Jan Polendy, Guest
~ The Rotary Duck ~
Jim: Shared that he owes an apology to Scott for sneaking up on his wife, who turns out is Jim’s neighbor. He went to introduce himself and had no idea it was Scott and his family!
Auggie: Denied the pressure put on him by Jim to make any sort of Duck announcement. He was too into his Lunch to grant Jim’s request.
Walter: Noted that it was last August 15th that Julie was hospitalized for over a month. Once she came home, they had to rearrange their lives quite a bit. Last night she realized she forgot something in the middle of the night and fell in the kitchen. It has been a long year of Walter upping his chores and responsibilities through her health struggles. Next on Walters list is to get her a new wheelchair.
Paul: Shared that it has been a big year for Honey Harvesting, which is now done. He also thanked Dan K for putting together the Bi-Monthly Newberg Advantage Articles about Rotary and their programs. The August article was about the Resource Rooms, an amazing program we support Annually. He noted that this is great for public relations.
Dan K: Noted that the Resource Rooms was only one of a few programs completely external to our Club, but that the program directors are always REALLY excited and thankful we are reaching out to help them highlight the amazing work they do. Dan also noted that last week we had an amazing Bonsai Class from Rick. This is an example of an outside the box idea for an auction item: a class where you can pass on a skill or hobby such as Art, Music, or Cooking. (He also admitted that Rick called him out on mis-pronouncing “Bonsai”. He defended himself by pointing out that the little he knows about Bonsai is only what he learned from Mr. Miagi in the Karate Kid movies. Well Dan watched the Bonsai clip from that movie and it turns out Mr. Miagi VERY SPECIFICALLY explained to Young Daniel Karuso the correct pronounciation… So Dan really SHOULD have known how to pronounce it if he did in fact learn anything from Mr. Miagi…)
DAN K PROCUREMENT UPDATE!!!: Big Thank You to the following who have donated an item/package to the auction
- Rotarian Emily G, who has confirmed that she will contribute a photography session.
- Coffee Cat – donated gift certificate for some home made Cinnamon Rolls!
- Rotarian Rick K – donated a Custom Built Wine Rack end table as well as tickets to next year’s Concours D’Elegance Car Show
Om: Shared that on September 7th we will have a special meeting designed for FUN! It will be at the Chehalem Cultural Center and she encouraged us to bring a guest, possibly a prospective new member? Don’t miss this meeting!
Amber: Shared that Youth Outreach will be wrapping up their Blueberry picking fundraiser. Contact Amber for Blueberries, which will be $30 per flat, $15 for half Flat. This is first come first serve and this is an opportunity sponsored by the Austin Foundation.
Madeline: Shared that we will have an Auction Committee Meeting after this meeting and again every Wednesday after the Club Meetings.
Auggie: Asked Paul if he has honey for him. Also noted that he and many other Rotarians attended the Celebration of Life for John Kerekanich, who was a past president of our club. You can learn more about him and other Past Presidents from our Website. Here is a link to that- see pages 37 and 38. Several Rotarians shared at the event and Auggie learned a lot about John and those presenters.
~ Today’s Program: Classification Talk with Scott Parker ~
Scott Parker is the Executive Director of the Chehalem Valley Chamber of Commerce, located currently in Downtown Newberg. (letter from the editor: Scott’s presentation was AMAZING and he has already lived several lifetimes worth of adventure… so I captured as much as I could, but liekly did not do his story justice.)
Scott’s oldest child is Delaney (17). She is a 2 time National Champion in Karate for Kata. While she was winning titles around the age of 12, she discovered Dance and decided to focus on a pursuit in Dance instead. She naturally excelled in Dance and has even worked with Nationally-renown dance photographers. At the age of 15 she was accepted into Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, which is the top private performing arts school in the country.
Scott’s son Finnley (14) is currently in the anvil academy as he is very hands-on with his learning. He loves Mountain-Biking and all types of outdoor adventure. He even shared of an occasion where a Beaver tripped him up with a stick.
Scott’s youngest is Veronica (9), and we may remember her from a few Rotary meetings she has attended. She is super fun, cool and outgoing. She is a creative, wacky kid.
Originally Scott is from Buffalo, New York, and is a Bills and Sabres fan. He got his Bachelors of Science in Education form Buffalo State College, where he played 4 years of college and was nationally ranked. He then got a Masters in Education from Grand Canyon University. After College he moved to Steamboat Springs, CO, aka Ski-town USA. Scott and a friend then decided to embark on a travelling educational mission where they travelled the Lewis and Clark trail, stopping in schools to teach about the L&C Trail. Their trip was a HUGE adventure and it was nearly cut short in Montana by their car breaking down: but they decided to complete the adventure by bike, hundreds of miles.
Scott also shared about how for 27 years he was part of a “comedy-juggling-magic troupe called We’re Not Clowns. They travelled all over the world performing their acts. (letter from the editor again: Scott failed to mention that if you google the name of his Troupe, you can watch FULL PERFORMANCES on youtube!!! Give it a go and sit back and enjoy…)
So he and his wife lived in Steamboat Springs for 12 years, where he was a Rotarian and even served as President of his club, and moved back to Western New York living in the country with chickens, ducks, etc. They then moved to Pheonix for less than a year before he found that the Historic Chief Theater, in Steamboat Springs, was in need of an Executive Director, Scotts dream job, so they moved back where he worked for 8 years. They had so many amazing acts of all types until COVID, which made things difficult and the theater owners evicted them, and is now empty. After they closed the Theatre, Scott came to the Chehalem Valley Chamber of Commerce and loves it. He helped create the local Chehalem Valley Vaudeville show, which was 2 sold out shows. They went great an he plans to do more of them, including end of this September and beginning of October.
