~ The Rotary Duck ~

Paula: Paula recently had a chance to catch up with her nephew from Kazakhstan, which was very nice and looks forward to visiting him again.

Mike: There are a lot of things going on at the district level: President elect training, a district assembly in April, and more. He noticed our club is an anomaly. After 15 years of fluctuating membership, we are currently up to 75 members, including our honorary members. As a means of district comparison, over the last 9 years, McMinnville went from 100 members to 41, Clackamas went from 89 to low 60s. The downward trend over the decade is nearly district-wide with the exception of Newberg. We should be proud that our membership has done so well, and even includes many younger members than in the past. Portland Kawanis even folded after 100 years.

Shannon B: The great sustaining efforts of the Newberg club is a tribute to us all and our efforts. Lets continue to show resilience and lead by example.

Kathie: Donated in memory of a dear friend who passed away unexpectedly. He was her pastor and board member to LINCS, a Sheridan non-profit helping youth in the community. He lived a life of love and acceptance, inspiring her in many ways.

Dan: Wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. His family will for-go the typical family tradition and instead ordering a meal in an effort to support a local business during the shutdown. Many restaurants are open and selling Thanksgiving meals each year. Shannon B said she will be doing the same, at Rosmarino Osteria Italiana.

Dale: Expressed that we all have so much to be thankful for. He is thankful that he works with great people worldwide at Relief International and dedicated his donation in honor of the first COVID-19 death at his global organization, a Doctor in Syria. Additionally, he honored an employee who used to work for him who had his funeral yesterday, Sergei, a military man and was killed in action.

Julie & Walter: They are thankful to be in Rotary, as a Rotarian recently stepped up to help them out with something they were unable to do themselves due to old age. Thanks for being there for one another!

Todd: Thanked the Friendsview employees and residents for their high levels of efforts in fighting COVID. They had a difficult month whereby they had to do several rounds of COVID testing resulting from different occasions of contact tracing and possible positive tests. Their great efforts have really served to protect everyone living and working at Friendsview. They have only had 1 resident test positive, and that was back in March. Shannon B thanked them for their diligence as they have always had impeccable integrity and always treated their staff well.

Joe: Gave a shoutout to all parents, grandparents, legal guardians, and other community members who have been supporting their students over the last few months. Also reminded us that Friday the 27th is Native American Heritage Day in the US. Specifically honoring the Yamhill Native America Tribe, for which Yamhill County was named, who are an important part of our history.

Shannon B: Fined herself for the noisy birds we all heard singing in the background of her house. They were an early Christmas gift for her son and they get really excited, especially when she is in virtual meetings.

Kim: Thanked everyone who has supported her in terms of our successful membership efforts. Also, gave a shoutout to her mom who works in a care center in Utah, and has also been working very hard with regards to fending off COVID. All of the care centers deserve credit for their life saving efforts.

Ralph: Gave kudos to YCAP. He has been giving assistance to a homeless individual by allowing her to live on his property, but told her she needs to find a safe option for winter. She was recently successful in getting temporary housing at a Motel through YCAP at least through the holiday season.

Matt: Has been absent from several meetings, but is thankful for Beavers recent success, his kids doing well in their first quarter of school, and proud of his wife for working, taking classes, and serving the community.

Auggie: Auggie announced his presentation of each of the Rotary Quilt Squares over the next 9 weeks, which he used as his virtual background:

~ Today’s Program: Debby Thomas: Classification Talk ~

Debby is the Dean of the College of business at George Fox University, a Leadership Coach at Professional Development Academy, and a Newberg Resident and Professional. She has joined Rotary in the spirit of her lifelong goal of helping people. Additonally, as the dean of the College of Business at George Fox, she hopes to work towards further integrating her department into the community. She is excited to learn about different opportunities for herself, her students, and GFU to serve the community.

Debby lives in Newberg with her Family. She has 4 kids, one born in Tualatin, and another in Belgium, while they lived there preparing for a move to Rwanda. Her youngest two kids were born in Rwanda, where they lived for 20 years working as a missionary. She met her husband at George Fox, and noted that her kids are 5th generation students at GFU! She was really hoping to work for George Fox after moving back to the states and she was fortunate enough for that to work out for her.

Rwanda is a the “Country of 1000 Hills” named for its terrain, and is located right in the heart of Africa. It is very small but very densely populated. After she and her husband graduated from GFU, they made plans to serve in India to work with the organization Evangelical Friends Mission, but they ended up being sent by the organization and by God to Rwanda, which happened to be during an extremely politically dangerous period. Her family was even robbed at their home, at gunpoint on her second week living there! They were so committed to helping/serving that they stayed, persisted, and learned the language, which is considered one of the most difficult languages to learn. She found that the people of Rwanda had a great enthusiasm at church but went home to terrible standards of living, where they had high fatality rates to illnesses and poor educational attendance. Debby decided to spend her time serving in Rwanda to work to really provide a whole-life transformation for the people of her new community. She partnered with Discipleing for Development, a group that helped with those efforts of working with the people towards improving the communities. They succeeded in helping many people help themselves in terms of getting out of poverty, which rippled out positivity and improvements in other aspects of life. Their success included really doing research, working with the people to make sure they recognize what needs they have and are ready to buy into. They even worked with the United Nations and learned from past mistakes made from other organizations or past efforts. She really strived to empower the people to change their own minds and believe in themselves and what they are working towards, to ensure that they become self-sustaining rather than reliant on the missionaries.

She also started and ran a school, teaching other kids of missionaries. Her kids very much enjoyed growing up in Africa, and attended a Christian school in Kenya. Their campus even was home to interesting wildlife including Baboons and monkeys.

She has also started and run a few commercial businesses making and selling foods such food made from the extremely nutritious extracts from the Morniga Tree. She will forever be a huge fan of ethinic foods. She now lives in Newberg and works at GFU.

~ The Rotary Duck ~

Shannon B: Shannon recently found out that her son was behind on his polio vaccinations. She finally got him caught up when he went in to get flu shots!

Dan: Shared an email from Rick Kaufman. Rick sent a very kind email expressing gratitude for Dan taking on the newsletter and shared with Dan a history of Rick’s service to Rotary: Ricks has served 52 years in Rotary and has served in virtually every club position including President twice, and a few at the District Level. His Rotary experiences have extended all across the world including the snowy Alps of France and Switzerland to the hot, bubbling mud-pots of New Zealand, as well as a number of the States, east and west of the US. Dan shared this email as a reminder to everyone of the value of quick and easy encouragement from our peers and as a reminder that many members who are unavailable to make it to virtual meetings are still following the club through website and newsletters and are serving the club and community when possible (I believe I saw a few awesome items from Rick at the Auction).

Geoff: He thanked Dan for his Rotary package Geoff won, he thanked Auggie for the Rotary Mural he is sharing in his Zoom background, is donating money for Polio if anyone can guess how many countries Geoff has traveled to. Clue: it is a product of 2 different prime numbers! The answer is 77!

Mike: Kudos to Auggie for the “adios polio” mural he found, and kudos to Lynn for finding that the mural is from the Rotary Club of Glenview Illinois.

Lynn: Matched Mikes donation for giving her a Kudos

Auggie: Gave shoutout to Gene for his way of championing his cancer treatments and to the Huskies for taking down the Beavers.

Brandy: Also happy to see Oregon football teams get beat as she is a die hard Cougar fan. She also thanked Shannon and Michelle for bringing her auction goodies and thanked them again for all of their efforts with the auction.

Joe: Gave to Polio but also noted that he has socks with a skateboarding dog.

Julie: Noted that she almost figured out how to use her new web camera, but hasn’t quite gotten the audio to work!

Ann: Shoutout to Shannon K and her team for their auction efforts.

Shannon B: Thanks to the auction team and also to First Federal for donating the cost of the square fees that are charged for our online donating.

Doug: The Portland State Vikings’ football games are postponed, but he wanted to give them love anyway.

Walter: Mentioned that he has always made it a point, after buying wine at charity auctions, to contact the wineries to thank them for their support of the Rotary Club and the Community. GREAT IDEA, Walter! (He once even was offered a free bottle for his kind words…)

Spike: Oregon beat Washington State this past weekend!

Total Collected today for Polio Plus: $222

~ Today’s Program: Lauren Ross: Precision Helicopters and Tour de Vine by Heli ~

Shannon B introduced guest speaker Lauren Ross: Lauren began her working career as a dance instructor and choreographer in San Jose, California after obtaining a Bachelors of Arts in Dance with a minor in Hospitality and event management from San Jose State University. Years later her passion for arts education came second to her love of the hospitality industry, and after working abroad in the UK and moving to Salem, Oregon Lauren pursued a career in aviation. She was hired by Precision and Tour de Vine by Heli in 2019 and is now their helicopter winery tour operations coordinator and manned operations assistant.

Lauren is visiting to share about Tour de Vine by Heli (website), a winery tour organization, and also about Precision. Precision handles everything aviation. They offer flight operations manned and unmanned (drones). They also do aircraft maintenance, flight school, and aircraft sales. Precision was established in 1983 as a small mom and pop business and has grown into a large business with lots of operations. If you are interested in a pilots licence or need commercial certifications for airplanes or helicopters, they can offer that locally. They are now headquartered in McMinnville near the Aviation Museum (perfect location!). They even donate to local auctions easy year. (Brandy won it once, said it was one of the most amazing experiences and felt like a serious VIP!)

Services they provide include but are not limited to:

  • Aircraft Maintenance and Sales (Buy my own aircraft? sounds fun)
  • Flight Training for Helicopters and planes. (Learn to Fly the friendly skies!)
  • Flying unmanned drones for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR) missions and have worked with the forest service including during this past wildfire season. (Not to be confused with UFOs)
  • Fire fighting – They work with the Forest Service, Cal Fire, ODOT, and more to transport and dump water onto the wildfires (Thank you for your part in controlling devastating fires!)
  • Christmas Tree Hauling – Noble tree Christmas farm hires them to collect and transport trees from location to transport truck. (Sounds challenging!)
  • Heli-skiing – They fly skiers and snow boarders to the top of a mountain to drop them off to ski down. (Like in the movies!)
  • Charter Services – Personal transportation to the coast, Mount Hood, or other spots. Also a great opportunity to see the state’s beauty. (Traveling in Style for sure!)
  • Winery Tours (Tour de vine by Heli) – they host you for breakfast, Champaign, and then fly you to a winery for an hour and a half, to another winery for lunch, and then a third winery. There are approximately 30 wineries in the Willamette Valley they fly to. The tour season is May through October, but can arrange out of season tours. (Sounds like an amazing gift idea for Christmas, Birthday, or Anniversary!)

~ Announcements ~

Shannon reminded us that there are many veterans serving in our club and spoke on the importance of gratitude towards those individuals and recognized that Patriotism is not a political ideology, but a feeling based on appreciation for all we have. The club then shared a moment of silence in respect and gratitude for Veterans in our club, community, and nation. Walter Want had shared some of his experiences on the front page of last week’s Graphic. Thanks Walter for your shared stories.

Shannon opened the floor for anyone to share remarks or comments related to service.

Laura: Her club in Texas holds a fundraiser whereby they invite family, friends, club members, and community members to buy a flag for $40 in honor of someone they know who served. They then post all those flags on Veterans Day in the park downtown, and then give you the flag you bought after it is flown. Last year Laura bought a flag for her husband and then had it framed.

Julie: Julie thinks that Walter should be fined for revealing in the publication that Walter and her met in a “Bar”. She insists that it was a dinner club, not a bar, and he should be fined for sharing that to the world.

Corey: Last week the Morning Club lost a member Ed Howard, who was also a Veteran, to Pancreatic Cancer. He was a great person, colleague, and Rotarian. Paula and Auggie echoed his words, sharing a bit about Ed’s service and passion for running.

Geoff: Recognized his Father, who served in the Navy for 26 years throughout Geoff’s life. They used to record and send messages on Reel-to-Reel tapes. It shaped his father’s character and that of the whole family.

Auggie: Auggie gave props to Walter for being able to keep a secret for so long. But also gave thanks to all who served.

Doug: Celebrated the 245th first day of the US Marine Corp.

~ Guests ~

No Guests today, as last week we inducted a slew of new members!

~ The Rotary Duck ~

Shannon B: Shannon and her family got flu shots at Edwards Elementary and also admitted that she realized her kid had ironically been behind on receiving his Polio Vaccine, but luckily they were able to get that done on the spot.

Julie: Will send money out of Walters account as punishment for his infraction of publicizing in the Graphic that they met in a Bar.

Laura: Announced that the Rotary International violence against women grant has finally been approved and gave thanks to all who helped contribute to that project. Important work will be done to prevent violence against women.

Mike: Gave thanks to Laura for her hard work, patience, and persistence in the difficult grant project she just concluded.

Auggie: This past week he had conversations with their partners in Guatamala and they reached the conclusion that they will be cancelling their upcoming trip in March due to COVID. They typically prepare 4-5 months in advance, but due to increases in US cases they felt the need to cancel. He shared that they have heavy restrictions related to COVID and those really helped their numbers. Compared to the US they are doing great.

Judy: Gave a big shout out and Kudos to the auction team for the quick and convenient deliveries of items. She has received and hung the wonderful painting by Laura she won at the auction.

Joe: Used Walter in his Superintendent Comments during last night’s School Board Meeting as an example of the many Veterans who may not be able to tell their stories. He appreciates Walter and all other Veterans who served. Side note: he also has donuts on his socks.

Paula: Contributed in honor of her father who served as a Sergeant in World War II. He left behind a wonderful collection of photos taken during his duty.

~ Today’s Program: Auction Recap by Shannon Knight and Michelle Colvin~

Shannon Knight gave thanks to all who participated, from the auction team to the people who donated items, to buyers. Many folks went above and beyond to help with the auction. The first award they gave was to the Rotarian with the most Friends and Family who joined the auction: Mike Caruso! Thanks Mike. The award for best footware was Om! She shared her heels during airmeet and was a good time. The award for best Sponsor Support goes to Geoff and Spike! Thanks for your hard work finding and managing Sponsor support! The award for the best Auction Team Encourager goes to Dan. Dan frequently checked in and asked for opportunities to help and ease stress. The next award is for the best Delivery Driver: Denise and Paris (Om’s Daughter and interact member). Every contribution was noted and they are happy to announce that the auction raised a Net gain of $22,869. They are looking for feedback regarding what went well and what didn’t.

They opened the floor for feedback: Joe said he loved the live auction part and thinks it would be fun to do more of those items, but that the whole event was great. Judy echoed that sentiment. She also noted that she would have liked to have confirmed that they did or did not win the item in the end and when they would receive the items. Geoff said he will share offline some ideas about marketing efforts. He also suggested that they could pay for auction team members to attend other auctions for additional experience and ideas. Shannon B pointed out that much has been learned regarding the pros and cons, and hope to keep valuable lessons going forward regardless of if the next auction is Virtual. Paula asked about what can the club members do to help sell golden tickets and encourage engagement of members to sign up and register. Shannon K said that the need to use the online portal created some obstacles. It would have been beneficial to have people make calls to register previous or likely supporters. Next year they hope to have several teams of several members each to run certain aspects of the efforts. Auggie suggested maybe a scheduled call reminding Rotarians of the start if the auction. Paula pointed out that last year they sold the tickets at the last second when the Auctioneer worked the crowd into buying the remainder of the tickets in the final hour. Shannon B pointed out that they will improve the operation of the Golden Tickets. Shannon K said 24 golden tickets were sold and about 70 users registered (though many more in attendance), whereby the typical stats is 200 attendees and 100 tickets sold. Auggie proposed that there are opportunities to invite other neighboring Rotary Clubs. It was pointed out that hundreds of postcards were mailed and many political and other prominent members of the community were invited, but fewer turned out than typical.

Group Consensus was that we all loved the Auction! Thanks to the Auction Team for navigating this difficult year!

Shannon B: We have officially, in just our first quarter, met our Annual Goal for Polio Plus days! Special thanks goes to Geoff for last months matching pledge!

Kathie: Concluded the diaper drive for A Family Place a few weeks ago and they collected nearly 5,000 diapers and over 7,000 wipes. She also gave a shout out to First Federal for donating huge in the diaper drive as well as First Federal’s overall annual contribution tally of $42,000 this year to the Newberg Community!

Joe: We passed our school bond last night with a higher approval than expected. He gave thanks to the community for voting this. He also thanked Walter for being a good sport regarding his joke about Walter learning the mute button during the Auction.

Geoff: Wanted to challenge Joe to show us his awesome socks! We then spent a few more minutes talking about socks.

Brandy: She agreed with the excitement of the passing of the bond. She also wanted to shout out to Mike and Dr. Amy Caruso, who outbid her on all sorts of items. Great minds think alike!

Jim: Reminder that Veteran’s Day is coming up, and to remind people to remember and give thanks to our Club members who have served. He also read an amazing article about Walter and to thank him for his service. This article was featured on the front page of this week’s Newberg Graphic. Online Subscribers click here.

Tony: The start of the 18th annual Turkey donation effort has begun. Come drop a turkey off with Tony at Excel Fitness or $20! They donate these Turkeys to the local Food Bank. Over the last few years, between Newberg and Mcminnville Club, they have donated between 2,500 to 2,800 Lbs of Turkey.

Shannon B: Congratulations to Denise Bacon for winning her reelection to Newberg City Council last night.

Denise: Is humbled and grateful, and has now served for 12 years and now will have another 4 more to go.

Total: $146 donated to the Duck! Thanks Donors!
