President Joe Morelock welcomed Rotarians and Friends of Rotary to the Hybrid Live/Zoom meeting at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at the Chehalem Cultural Center.

~ Announcements ~
Auction Updates: The Auction will take place on Friday, October 29th, 2021. If you would like to find more opportunities to help out or learn more about the coming auction, reach out to Amy. If you have a great idea for an auction item, get them in soon as the auction date is fast approaching. Paper forms will be available at the meetings if you already have items or packages procured. Also if you would like to give a shout out to donors, you can do so at the Club Meeting and we will post in the Newsletter. That being said, a big thank you goes out to the following who have recently made a contribution to our auction:

Judy: Interact project of raising money for the Keeping kids in school Kenya project is going strong. She thanked Christy’s husband for making a big donation to the project and made her own commitment. They are not over $18,000 and on their way to the goal of $31,200.
Mike: Welcome back to Julie!
Walter: Announced his wife Julie has been out for a while and is now back.
Paula: Welcome back to Julie!
Rick: Brought in his auction items to show a few people, beautiful pieces.
Christy: Welcomed Julie back. Also noted that Mike and his wife were walking through her neighborhood so she had a great opportunity to sit down for a cup of coffee.
Auggie: Noted his granddaughter Zoey just turned 8 but unfortunately now lives in Florida. Also gave a big welcome back to Julie. Noted that his wife is her physical therapist.
Amy: Thanked everyone for the many donations coming in. We have a lot of fun items this year and the auction is looking like it will be a lot of fun. Amy also pointed out how important it is to get online (www.newbergrotary.org/auction) and buy your tickets, whether for live or virtual attendance, asap. This helps the production team get a sense for how many people to expect. Additionally, go online and buy some Golden Tickets while they are available! Finally, someone had donated a quick lock item but did not leave a name. If this was you, please let Amy know.
Curt: Welcome back Julie!
Kathi: Welcome back Julie!
Ralph: Gave big kudos to Shannon Buckmaster for her amazing leadership last year as President of the Club.
Dan: Noted that auction season is upon us and he has been hard at work soliciting/procuring a wide variety of different auction items and gave thanks to some more donors who have responded with amazing items: Luckee Dutch and CREAM Northwest. What a couple of sweet donors!
Amy: Gave thanks to Dan for going on a dedicated mission of finding donors for the auction.
Stuart: Gave kudos to the international service committee for getting grant approval for then Nepal project and getting approved quickly.
Kathie: Welcome back Julie! Also, her son Ethan passed the Oregon Bar! He is now an Oregon Attorney and she is hoping he comes to this area.
Mike: Introduced and welcomed Stuart Martin, who is a Seaside Rotary Past President. He has been instrumental for getting grants passed throughout the district.
Kim: Welcome back Julie! Also yesterday did CVC student leadership program and loved it.
Julie: Thanked everyone. She said Rotary has been a wonderful thing in her life for over 30 years, as she was one of the first women in this club, and this health issue she had was one in a million and they said she should be able to bounce back with some hard work in physical therapy. She is planning on participating in the auction and thanked everyone for helping put it together.
Stan: Gave kudos to Joe for his hard work through this difficult time at the Newberg School District.
~ Today’s Program: Rise to Shine Education Foundation by Christy Cowgill and Emily Bakhitah ~
Christy has been working with the Interact Club on a fundraising effort aimed at providing opportunities for a quality education for young girls in Kenya. The goal of the Rise to Shine Educational Foundation is to keep Kenyan girls in school. Emily Bakhitah, was invited here to share her program today. Christy shared that Braqndy invited her to get involved in Rotary Youth services and highlighted some of the work that Judy and Denise have done in this area of Rotary. She noted that last year the Interact students spoke about their pen pals in Africa that pushed Christy to do some research help with this project. Last year, 14 Clubs, including our Interact Club, throughout District 5100 raised enough money to support 54 Kenyan Students to go to school. This year, the Newberg Club will collect the funds and organize the effort to support those students for a second year of school. She shared that so far we have raised over $18,000. She thanked Denise, Judy, Paul, and Laura for their support on this project and showed a video put together whereby those very students gave words of appreciation for this support and shared about why this is important to them. She then welcomed and introduced our guest speaker, Emily Bakhitah.
Emily Bakhitah is a member of the Rotary Club of Kisumu Winam (Kenya) and the Executive Director of the Rise to Shine Education Foundation. Emily shared that the cost per student is just $600 on average, which makes sure that they have schooling fees, food, uniforms, books, and transportation. She said she began this project as a work of the heard born from passion and generosity. When she was young, her eldest (of 9 girls) sisters helped raiser them all and became pregnant at 13. This is not unusual as many young girls get married off early. Fortunately for Emily, at the age of 8 she was given a scholarship when a local priest came to their family with this opportunity to attend Primary school. She worked hard and became the best student in the district, affording her a scholarship to attend high school, which then led to a scholarship for college, eventually earning a Bachelors Degree. Many other young girls don’t want to get forced into marriage and instead have dreams of education and economic independence. She helped another young girl find this opportunity, which led to helping more and more young girls achieve this type of dream, eventually starting the Rise to Shine Educational Foundation.
