~ The Rotary Duck ~
Anders: Shared that he is about to become President of the Rotary Club of Skara, Sweden. He noted that their Club in Sweden had decided to keep their leadership in place through the pandemic and that he will soon finally become acting president. He also noted that as a person living in Sweden, he is a little nervous about the uneased divisiveness in the US. He recommended that we may not be hugging each other enough.
Michael S: Introduced his coworker Josh wh ois is office Administrator. Also noted that his newborn Jack is now almost 4 months old. He is a great baby and has been sleeping through the night since about 7 to 8 weeks. Michael was on Paternity leave while his wife was working and Jack is now in Day Care and Michael is back at work.
Michelle: Shared that her sister Karrin is visiting from San Diego as they are finally going on their big vacation that was originally planned and cancelled in March of 2020.
Christy: Was pleased to have the opportunity to sit with our Swedish guests Ander and Greta. Ander was an exchange student with Rotary 40 years ago in Detroit, and now Greta is an exchange student. If anyone wants to work with our Newberg exchange program, there is a need for hosts. She also noted that Emily Bakhita will be speaking next weeks meeting and will be the guest at a social event put on by Denise. She also thanked Becky and the Club for getting tickets to the Shazam Magic show. They offered these tickets free to the club and the show was awesome.
Denise: Reminded us to RSVP to her event at her house on the 25th, rather than surprising her. Also is excited about the success of the Interact Club Project success as there were a lot of businesses that stepped up to help and even some that heard about it after the fact and want to participate in the future.
Paul: Is now a Great Grandfather. His grandson in Wyoming just had a baby. He has 17 Grandchildren total, and now 1 great grandchild.
Spike: Reminded us of John Kerekanich’s service is on August 7. Reach out to Spike if you are interested in an invitation to this service.
Paul: Nice to see Mike Caruso at todays meeting. Also invited everyone to contact them if they need removal of a rogue swarm of honey bees.
Ralph: Recently got married. Congrats Ralph!
Auggie: Noticed Becky’s awesome boots.
Karen: Noted how much amazing things Rotary does and how awesome their efforts to eradicate polio has been over the decades. She noted that she intends to research more and do a presentation on it.
Kathie: Noted that she has worked with Jordan, our guest speaker, and gave kudos to how great she is to work with when it comes to scholarships. She also invited us all to First Federal’s Picnic in the Parking Lot on June 30th, where there will be free hotdogs in celebration of 100 years in service.
Becky: Thanks to all who attended and helped out with the scholarship committee, fundraising, and the awards night.
Laura: Thanks to Becky for stepping up and working very hard to carry our Club forward when we needed a leader.
~ Today’s Program Part 1: NHS College and Career Center with Jordan Terriere-Dobroglio ~
Jordan Terriere-Dobroglio works for the Newberg High School as the Post-secondary Success Coordinator within the College and Career Center. Work-based Learning, also known as internships, are opportunities for students to get out into the work force for hands-on learning in different fields. This program benefits multiple parties at once:
- Students: benefit from hands-on learning with an opportunity to test out a career field that interests them. They also learn responsibility, hard work, professionalism, and get to begin their early resume.
- Newberg School District: benefit as an opportunity to connect with the business community and as another critical way to provide a rounded education for students.
- Businesses: Get to see and utilize the young, local talent, get to provide education to local students.
This program includes giving the student an opportunity during the school day to go out and have an educational internship at a local company or organization, such as Adec. It can be during the semester, an hour or two at a time, and can be paid or unpaid depending on the situation or business. It is very flexible for the student and business by design. Adec hosted 3 students this term, which included real, hands-on work. Work-based learning is not only akin to going out and getting a job, but it also allows them to see different operational and organizational aspects of a business. The student also gets feedback from the company after the internships and the students receive elective credit for their experience.
If your business or someone you know has a business who is interested in hosting a high school intern, please reach out to Jordan at the school district.
~ Today’s Program Part 2: The Pancake Breakfast Update with Karen and Aaron ~
Karen and Aaron gave the following updates on the Pancake Breakfast:
- Sponsorships are open, if interested or know someone who is interested, reach out for more information. There are many levels of sponsorship available.
- If anyone is interested in becoming Spike’s mentee with the intent to take over for him in future years, your service would be appreciated.
- The new committee is really excited to be designing a new manual of sorts that will serve for the future events so everyone will have a really easy time picking up where others left off. Kudos were given to Rachel Powell of the EBs for leading their group.
- If you have volunteered in the past and have some wisdom or notes for improvements, please come forward with your ideas to help them design the guides.
Check your e-mails for Zoom meeting access information, special announcements, and newsletter release notifications.
