Congratulations to Emily G: Emily was recently inducted into the club.
Interact’s free public clinic at the Park has officially been rescheduled to May 28th from 10am to 2pm at Fernwood Grange. The event will be supporting people in need of pet supplies, vaccines, and microchipping. Please spread the word to help make this event a big success in serving our community.
Rotary Installation Dinner and Past Presidents Dinner – The event will be celebrating outgoing and incoming officers, presenting awards, giving thanks to past presidents’ service. It will take place at the Chehalem Wine Tasting Room on June 16 at 6:30pm. Plus ones are welcome, and it is VERY IMPORTANT to RSVP as soon as you can to ease the stress and make for a smooth planning process for the event. To RSVP, email [email protected]. Contact Michelle Colvin regarding payment: Tickets are $35 per person and include dinner, wine, and fun (it really was an amazing value and a lot of fun last year).
Our Annual Memorial Park Cleanup Event – For those who don’t know, our Club annually participates in an effort to cleanup Memorial Park in advance of Memorial day activities. This involves cleaning, weeding, laying barkdust, etc. We need as many people as possible to help in this effort, and it will take place on Thursday, May 26 from 4-6pm.
~ Guests ~
Yasmine Uribe, Guest Speaker
~ The Rotary Duck ~
Todd: Welcomed Yasmine, who is speaking today and works with him at Friendsview.
Wendy: Thanks to Walter for volunteering to do the Duck, and on his Birthday! Happy Birthday!
Walter: Is celebrating his 80th Birthday.
Judy: Noted that the very first meeting she ever attended with our Club was about 5 years prior in this very room at Canyon Commons. She also asked members to please help the Interact Club’s project by spreading the word and volunteering to help set up and/or take down the event on May 28th.
Curt: Also celebrating a birthday, but is one year older than Walter.
Jim: Noted that the original reason he joined Rotary was because of the great service they do for the community. He is looking for Rotarians to volunteer a couple of hours to show up to Memorial Park to do beautification work before Memorial Day. It will take place on Thursday, May 26th from 4-6pm. He noted that its fun, not too strenuous, and he will look at getting some Pizza to thank the volunteers.
Auggie: Announced that the Newberg Rotary Foundation is developing a new Trades Scholarship. Next week they will announce that and announce which Rotarian it will be named after and dedicated in honor of. Stay Tuned!
Todd: Noted that he has been online only for a VERY long time and is happy to be back in person after all this time.
Stan: Shared that over the decades he has learned about Service Above Self. Rotary has taught him a lot and he has been married for 66 years because of it.
Paula: Wished Walter a Happy Birthday.
Lisa: Noted how happy she is to see Stan and Todd at today’s meeting.
Kathi F: Tomorrow is her 1 year anniversary of her return to Rotary.
Wendy: Gave kudos to Shannon K for helping her with her new Leadership Role in the club. She also noted that the Banquet is coming up and that she really wants everyone to RSVP as soon as possible. Email Wendy an RSVP.
Dan K: Mentioned that he is working with Rotary International to confirm donations from the club as it seems as though some of our members’ donations may not have been applied to our Club. If you have donated between July 2021 and now, please contact Dan K privately to let him know, so he can confirm that your contribution to our club has been recorded properly.
Shannon K: Reminded everyone that the Pancake Breakfast planning has been moving along and noted that Sponsorships are needed. There is a long term vision to make it free to the community, but that would not be possible without bolstering out sponsorships. She also recommended everyone check out Dan R’s Podcast, as she checked it out this week and loved it. Here is the link to the episode Shannon was referring to about the Civility Project: Click here for his free Podcast.
Wendy: Noted that she is looking for some volunteer help with the Banquet coming up next month. Please let her know if you are available because as of now, she is alone in putting it together. Reminded everyone how important it is to donate to The Rotary Foundation. These donations play a part in our District Matching.
~ Today’s Program: English Language Learner Program with Yasmine Uribe ~
Friendsview has always made an effort to create a career pathway for their employees. They do career days in the community and hire young men and women as early as 14 or 15 years old. They make an effort to provide a pathway for their young employees to be able to grow and advance through the organization. They have even worked with Chemetka to create a CNA program that was sponsored by the morning club. Yasmine was one of the first students from this class and began working for Friendsview as a CNA right out of high school. She has advanced and been promoted since and is now leading the English Language Learner Program, which was designed to help provide opportunity and growth for other EEs for whom English is their second language. Denise Bacon helped Todd write a grant that originally funded this Program, for which they hope to find more grant funding for.
Yasmine, began working at Friendsview right as she finished highschool in 2018 as a CNA before being promoted to Med-tech. Todd then came to her to invite her to create their new English Language Learner Program and she began the program a couple of years ago, and it has grown into a fun, family-friendly program. Any spanish speaking adult is welcomed to apply for this program, free of charge. They did online and in person classes. She got the word out by spreading fliers in both spanish and english, but also reaching out to stakeholders and organizations in the community to share the program’s availability. The teachers are bilingual and the program’s students have only had positive things to say and are very grateful for the opportunities. Reach out to Yasmine or Todd for more information on this program, which is available to anyone, including those who are not at all affiliated with Friendsview.

My boss recommended I sign up for a 401k…
But there is no way I could possibly run that far.

people will forget what you did,
but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
