~ The Rotary Duck ~

Judy: Had a Mea Culpa as she forgot about her Friday volunteering for the Pancake Breakfast.  Said no one minded as long as she helped out on clean up.  Editors comment: Thank you for yours and everyones time spent helping at the breakfast.

Shannon B: Thank you for yours and everyones time spent helping at the breakfast.

Kathie: Gave a brag about her son who is 3/4 of the way through taking the Oregon State Bar.  Luckily the final section is the one he is most prepared for. Even better, if he passes they plan to move back to Oregon!

Jeff: Gave thanks to everyone who came out to help at the Pancake Breakfast.  This event is so much fun and truely represents service above self.  It is also good exercise as JEff said he got over 10 miles of steps in.  Jeff also gave a shout out to Grant Gerke who used to play a huge part in putting on the event organization.  Also noted that they served over 800 meals in that one day.  WOW!

Spike: Introduced Grant Gerke.  Grant was a member of our club for many years.  He is a Past President of our club as was his father years before him.  He wanted to come back and visit the club.  Grant was also Shannon B’s Rotary Mentor.

Om: Introduced Amy Moran who is a business coach who just moved from Montana (originally from maine).   Her family is very big in Rotary and means a lot to her and her family.  Om also introduced Tina Smith who recently joined Premiere Property Group and just moved to Newberg.  She has a finance background and even has a side business doing financial consulting.  She loves to serve in community service organizations and decided to check out our club.

Eric: Noted that Grant was also his Rotary Mentor and convinced him to come to the club and eventually join.

Stan: Noted that the Senior Center Meals team has some open spots.  If you are looking to volunteer and maybe even do a few dishes, please reach out and sign up.

Jen Columbus: Mentioned that her Salem club is currently having their meeting in Salem, but she is happy to be here presenting.  She also noted that the last time she presented live was a year and a half ago at our club.

Spike: Donated in honor of the hard work Jeff did this year, and MANY years past, running and organizing the Pancake Breakfast. Thanks Jeff!

Lisa: Noted that she saw Christy up on the screen as a virtual attendee until Christy surprised her by showing up live!  She gave kudos to Christy for her amazing professional services she provides of hypnotherapy.  Lisa won the service at the auction and said it has been amazing working with her.  She also noted that it pays to connect with Rotary members as she was having trouble selling her furniture online until Kathie found her and bought some things from her.

Christy: Thanked Lisa for the kudos noting that she was running behind and even in her pajamas at the start of the meeting.  She logged in online, listened while she got ready and drove over, and arrived live to be here for the rest of the meeting!  Awesome to have hybrid meetings!  She also noted that Judy is her Rotary mentor and the reason she joined.

Judy: Noted that Christy will continue to give and contribute in many ways.  Noted that Christy started out as a friend of Judy’s daughter.  She has known her for years and happy to have her in the club.

Auggie: Happy to have Grant back today!

Ralph: Gave a shout out to Habitat for Humanity for their great work and noted that they are wrapping up a project currently.

~ Today’s Program: Oregon Community Foundation by Jenn Columbus and Deb Vaughn ~

Jen Columbus and Deb Vaughn noted that this is the first in-person presentation they have done for the Oregon Community Foundation, and interestingly enough a week before the March 2020 shutdown our Club was the LAST in-person presentation they did.

OCFs Vision: A healthy, thriving, sustainable, Oregon.

OCFs Mission: To improve the lives of all Oregonians through the power of philanthropy.

The Oregon Community Foundation was created in 1933.  It is one of many Community Foundations across the country.  Community Foundations are formed to serve in geographic areas where assets are co-invested and used to do certain work in those areas.  The Oregon Community Foundation was unique at its founding as it was created to support the whole state, rather than smaller geographic communities as was typical.  They are in the top 10 largest CFs in the nation and have over 3000 unique funds tied to donors.  They have $3.2 Billion of assets which are invested for growth and to provide grants.  In a typical year the OCF awards averages about $100 million in grants.  In 2020, however, they sent out $280 million in support.

The OCF has the following funds:

Donor Advised Funds:  Donors can give to OCF and provide direction on how to use the funds (like a mini-foundation)
Scholarship Funds:   Larges provider of scholarship funds in the State
Donor Designated Funds:   Donor designates a specific organization to receive the funds
Field of Interest Funds:   Donor designates a genre of support and leaves it to the OCF to use it in that area

Donations can be made by individuals, businesses, or communities.  The OCF most often receives cash or stock, but can receive all kionds of different assets of value and can work with donors on how to use them (i.e. Cash, Stock, Life Insurance Policies, Real Estate, Retirement Accounts, etc.)

5 things to know about the OCF:

  1. Donors can start with a gift of $5,000 or more
  2. Donors may support their favorite organizations inside and outside of Oregon
  3. Donors may give in their lifetime with a current fund or invest in their legacy with a deferred fund
  4. OCF offers permanently endowed funds as well as funds that are fully available for grantmaking
  5. Donors can engage current and future family members in charitable giving

For everyone who works with non-profits, you are eligible to receive funding from the OCF and can even reach out to the OCF for help writing grants.  Additionally, if you are interested in volunteering for the OCF, you can reach out to them to find out how (Shannon and Sean were given shout outs for volunteering with OCF so you may be able to ask them to share if you are curious about opportunities).

If you are interested in learning more, volunteering, or donating you may reach out to Jenn or Deb, the Northern Willamette Valley Regional Team at [email protected] and [email protected].  You can also visit the OCF website at www.oregoncf.org.
