Rotary’s Four Way Test of the things we think say or do….
Welcome to Newberg Noon Rotary Club!
Here’s our Newsletter for October 23, 2019
Greeter today: Brandy Penner.
Club President Corey Zielsdorf opened the meeting at Chehalem Cultural Center, having Laura Tilrico lead us in the Pledge.
Guests: Ryan Hess, Community Sales Leader/Holiday Retirement, hosted by Shannon Buckmaster; Bethany Pflug hosted by Connie Rice; Jekabs Bikis hosted by Geoff Gilmore….Jekabs was born in Soviet occupied Latvia and married his American wife when teaching/working/studying at a university in Texas. He currently is the Dean of GFU’s College of Business, an Early Bird Rotarian Club member, a father of four and resides in Newberg.
Visiting Rotarian: Laverne Pitts, Rotary Club of McMinnville Sunrise. She provided information on “Light the FIre” dinner/auction coming up on November 7.*
Rotary Moment: Lyn Montoya Quinn told us about meeting Rotarians doing an eye project in Italy while she was on vacation. Not speaking Italian was not an issue.
Foundation note: Rotary Foundation: For the 12th year in a row, The Rotary Foundation [TRF] has received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator. The four-star rating is recognition for demonstrating both strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency. Only one percent of the organizations that Charity Navigator evaluates have received 12 consecutive four-star evaluations.
And then there were the displays of “sartorial splendor”…..Shannon B. with her bright red shoes…AND Dr. Joe….would you believe THOSE SOCKS!?

Shannon B. handled The DUCK today…collected $92….but…with a special announcement from Yours Truly….the newsletter editor: On the tables find a descriptive history of The DUCK…..with credit [?] to Spike Sumner for taking the initiative to replace the old plastic pumpkin with the GORGEOUS DUCK we use today! The following contributors provided “fodder” for this week’s DUCK TALES….by filling out the forms available at every table….as all other stories associated with DUCK contributions were lacking written form. SO…reminder…if you want your story…your “DUCK TALE”…to be included in the newsletter, PLEASE use the DUCK TALE form[s] available at each table….and write it out…give it to me or leave it on your table, and I’ll pick it up after the meeting. REMEMBER…the newsletter is created not just for those present at the meetings, but also for those who either missed that meeting…AND/OR …those who do not attend the meetings at all, but still are interested in what goes on with our Rotary meetings/activities!
Jim McMaster: 1) Sorry that I have missed the last few meetings; 2) Thanks you, Shannon for communicating with my son Spencer McMaster who is in the Peace Corps in Eswatini, Africa. He will be speaking at the dual Newberg Rotary/Kiwanis meeting on December 19th. 3) Newberg Boys Water Polo rated tied as first in state, and the girls’ team is rated 1st, with 3 more weeks left in the season where each team will vie for state championship.
Brandy Penner: “I got enough kids to sign up for Lego Robotics class at Ewing Young Elementary!”
Gene Piros: “By the time I get Rick’s e-mail, I have forgotten what I said so I like this [DUCK TALES] idea!”….Gene also impressed with “Gender Equality of Dr. Joe’s Sox!”
Auggie Gonzales: “Newberg Urgent Care celebrates ‘on year’ anniversary with Kaiser Permanent Partnership. As a community, you benefit two ways: 1) You can schedule an appointment to see a Kaiser Primary Care Physician in Newberg! At Newberg Urgent Care appointment now available on Thursdays. 2) When you can’t get in to see your PCP, don’t want to drive to Portland or have an immediate medical need, you can be seen and treated at Newberg Urgent Dare, under your Kaiser Health Plan! Please share this wonderful info with an KP subscriber who isn’t aware of this newer community service.”
Matt Stephens’ son’s athletic prowess was mentioned by someone…other than Matt….but I still think it cost him something!
Laverne Pitts: * “Light the Fire” is returning to Newberg on November 7, 2019. Chef Paul Losch is returning with a team of local chefs to creat a delicious meal. Open bar will be stocked with local favorites. Providience Medical Group Newberg is the Flame sponsor. The event will be held at the Chehalem Cultural Center from 6PM – 9 PM with classical entertainment and an art auction.” Lavern provided plenty of printed info on this event at the tables.
Today’s program: Rachel Adams–Assemblage Symposium (Equity in the Wine Industry).
…..Rachel explained that “assemblage” is a winery term…but herein used as the title of a gathering January 14 & 15, 2020, at Linfield University in McMinnville, of women who work in the wine industry…and the differences in pay scale between men and women. Besides giving us an interesting history of the wine industry in Oregon, she provided “visuals” of charts, etc., that described the pay differences based on jobs and gender. She encouraged anyone who was interested to attend the January symposium where there will be a number of keynote speakers and round table work sessions. It is her group’s desire to make this an annual event…and their efforts to date have actually generated some interest internationally. Rachel ended her presentation with a request for funding….under the name of “IFUNDWOMEN”. Thank you , Rachel for a very interesting/informative “intro” to this subject!
REMINDER….sign up NOW for the 2020 Rotary International Convention in Hawaii! Details available in the latest Rotarian Magazine or on-line at rotary.org.
POLIO ERADICATION: “Recommended reading”….besides all the other “tid bits”….the November issue of The Rotarian Magazine has a fascinating segment on “THE PRICE of POLIO”. “Meet five Rotarians who understand the disease’s long-term consequences.” This is definitely a worthwhile read!
Next week’s meeting program, October 30, at Chehalem Cultural Center:
