~ Today’s Program: Rise to Shine Educational Foundation with Emily Bakhita ~

Emily Bakhita, visiting us all the way from Kenya, is the Founder and Executive Director of the Rise to Shine Educational Foundation, which was the recipient of the funds raised by our Interact Club last year with the help of about a dozen different Rotary Clubs in the area. Emily spoke about how when she was a young girl in Kenya, she was given a rare gift by a missionary: the finances needed to get her Primary and then Secondary education, which eventually let to University. Not many Kenyans, especially girls, have the opportunity to attend high school or college. Girls are pushed towards early marriage and early pregnancy otherwise. When she returned from school, she met another young girl who told her she wanted an education and to be like Emily. She took her to school, then eventually took 10 girls to school, which led to beginning this organization. They have now helped 552 Kenyan children. Many of these children also attended University and their success will likely have a critical impact on their communities and their families. She also shared that the organization was so happy to be able to grant scholarships but also noted that they were really only able to give scholarships to X kids out of the over 6,000 who applied. She feels deep, emotional sorrow for all of the applicants who she cant help, and that is why it is critical to continue to fundraise and support these scholarships.

She gave big thanks to our Club for helping raise funds to send 62 students to school this past year, which costs approximately $600 per student for tuition, uniforms, books, and even shoes, which some students have never owned.

She gave an update on her future plans, which no longer includes Kenyan Government, but will continue to operate in the Non-profit sector to try to help underprivileged kids. She also plans on possibly getting another Masters Degree, next in non-profit management.

~ Today’s Program Part 1: NHS College and Career Center with Jordan Terriere-Dobroglio ~

Jordan Terriere-Dobroglio works for the Newberg High School as the Post-secondary Success Coordinator within the College and Career Center. Work-based Learning, also known as internships, are opportunities for students to get out into the work force for hands-on learning in different fields. This program benefits multiple parties at once:

  • Students: benefit from hands-on learning with an opportunity to test out a career field that interests them. They also learn responsibility, hard work, professionalism, and get to begin their early resume.
  • Newberg School District: benefit as an opportunity to connect with the business community and as another critical way to provide a rounded education for students.
  • Businesses: Get to see and utilize the young, local talent, get to provide education to local students.

This program includes giving the student an opportunity during the school day to go out and have an educational internship at a local company or organization, such as Adec. It can be during the semester, an hour or two at a time, and can be paid or unpaid depending on the situation or business. It is very flexible for the student and business by design. Adec hosted 3 students this term, which included real, hands-on work. Work-based learning is not only akin to going out and getting a job, but it also allows them to see different operational and organizational aspects of a business. The student also gets feedback from the company after the internships and the students receive elective credit for their experience.

If your business or someone you know has a business who is interested in hosting a high school intern, please reach out to Jordan at the school district.

~ Today’s Program Part 2: The Pancake Breakfast Update with Karen and Aaron ~

Karen and Aaron gave the following updates on the Pancake Breakfast:

  • Sponsorships are open, if interested or know someone who is interested, reach out for more information. There are many levels of sponsorship available.
  • If anyone is interested in becoming Spike’s mentee with the intent to take over for him in future years, your service would be appreciated.
  • The new committee is really excited to be designing a new manual of sorts that will serve for the future events so everyone will have a really easy time picking up where others left off. Kudos were given to Rachel Powell of the EBs for leading their group.
  • If you have volunteered in the past and have some wisdom or notes for improvements, please come forward with your ideas to help them design the guides.

~ Today’s Program: Hazelden Betty Ford with Carrie Bates ~

Carrie Bates is a Senior Outreach Manager for Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation. Hazelden Betty Ford is a drug and alcohol substance abuse disorder treatment center also treating mental health disorder. It is located right here in Newberg for almost 30 years, and was founded by and donated by the Austins originally. She spoke about her life. She was a young girl who dreamt of becoming an Olympic athlete, but also was living with her mother’s battle with addiction and shared how that pushed her towards her love of the pool and becoming a better swimmer each day, 5 hours a day. Eventually, in 1983, her coach convinced her to apply for the Olympics, for which she qualified at the trials and ultimately won 3 Gold Medals. She went on to college at the University of Texas. Once she was in her 30s, she started a family and had a great career but began to struggle with alcohol addiction herself. She learned about the stigma of addiction and realized that we are all members of a community and we all deserve a chance at recovery. We owe it to the next generation to reduce the stigma of addiction in order to raise awareness and make it easier for people who need treatment to be able to seek help. In her own case, people have always recognized her as perfect professional athlete, all the while she was struggling quietly. After years of recovery, she recently celebrated 10 years of sobriety and now helps others with their struggles.
