Auggie: Bought some Honey from an unnamed source (Paul I bet!).

Laura: Our club is working on two global grants. This week the 911 EMS grant was approved and thanks go to Paula for her hard work on this grant. They got 21 clubs to donate a total of $35,000 for this grant. The total grant is $101,601. The second grant is the violence against women grant and is in its second phase after training the advocates. COVID has created a partial lockdown which has stalled the second phase.

Shannon K: Thanks to Paula who has volunteered to step in as temporary secretary while Shannon K is on leave for 8 weeks. If you have questions for secretary between September 1 through the end of October, please direct those to Paula. Also thanked Amy for stepping up to take on the Auction. Get out there and find donation items, whether you have an item yourself, a good idea, or know someone who might contribute. Also mentioned she is scheduled to have the baby next Thursday.

~ Today’s Program: New Member Classification Talk by Karen Roberts ~

Karen shared that she grew up in New York and has 4 siblings, one of which is her twin. Her years growing up was filled with adventures, being of service to others, music, travelling, and sports. Her parents made sure they got out and experienced different places, opportunities, and adventures. Every year they went on a 2 week road trip as a family (including the dog). One trip in particular introduced her to Colorado, which she fell in love with and eventually moved to. After some years in Colorado skiing and having fun, she moved to Texas where she met her husband John. A week after marriage, they moved back to Colorado to give him an opportunity to experience the beautiful state. After about a year they bounced over to John’s home state of Missouri in a very small town to start their family.

In 1997, a career opportunity for John brought them to the Dalles, Oregon, which to them is a paradise of a beautiful state. They have 3 kids, Austin (opened a copy shop in Portland and now starting another business), Sarah (OB Nurse in Newberg), and Daniel (who we all know is in Real Estate). Sarah and Daniel both graduated from George Fox. In search of stability, John eventually became a contractor and Karen went back to work after years of being a stay at home mother and worked with wind farms, which involved climbing to the top of 300 ft wind turbines. Eventually she joined her son Daniel in Real Estate and moved to Newberg/Dundee where she works now: as the Joyful Roberts Group.

Karen shared also about an emotional story that ultimately inspired her to joined Rotary. About 11 years ago, her older sister, who lived in Danshui, Chinda, shared of her experiences at their family reunion. Her sister saw a child with a cleft palette and looked into this medical issue in China. It was determined that there was a need to bring a medical mission to China to serve these children born with cleft pallettes, which took 3 years to organize and get clearance for, but ultimately brought life changing service to approximately 200 kids. This inspired Karen to join Rotary and serve the community in an attempt to make a difference.

Om: Gave for Polio.

~ Today’s Program: Rotary Club of Newberg Project Showcase ~

Today Paul lead a presentation highlighting the activities supported by our Club and out Club’s Foundation. He reminded us all that our club is called the “Newberg Rotary Club” and some years back a Foundation was formed and has a SEPARATE board from the Club board. This is important to distinguish that the Foundation Board determines how the funds held by the Foundation are spent, rather than the Club Board. These are two separate legal entities. He also noted that our Foundation disperses something in the ball park of $60,000 to $70,000 per year which includes some one-time projects and some recurring type programs.

Mike spoke on the Mural Projects: A handful of years back, shortly before joining the club, Geoff Gilmore set out to create a mural on the wall of his business Climax in Newberg to aid in the ability for people to really notice the building and install some great art. After joining the Club, he decided to spearhead a project series whereby Rotary could add to the beautification of the town, promote togetherness and promote Rotary in the Community. The first Rotary Mural was painted downtown on the side of Steve’s Auto Body. The second mural was painted on the Library Annex across from the Newberg Public Library. The third mural was pained on El Tala Mini-market right new Hoover Park. The 4th Rotary Mural is currently underway and set to begin painting soon on the side of Lewis Audio. This effort involves a lot of municipal bureaucratic effort and has been a fantastic collaboration with GFU and the GFU art department.

Denise spoke about her work with the Interact Club, who often does projects funded by the Foundation. Denise reported that the Interact Club spent another year on Zoom but were very engaged in the community. Their big project this year was the Providence Community Garden and Tied With Love. They are interested in continuing international support by working with Emily from Rise to Shine Educational Foundation in Kenya. Kyla Riddle spoke about her Program Tied with Love, a program that handmade blankets for the homeless. The had 30 volunteers and made 70 blankets. These were donated to Helping Hands for distribution.

Kathie Byers works with the Resource Room project at the school district. The 9 resource rooms in our district serve hundreds of youth annually. Each room received about $555 from the Foundation to purchase items to support students whose family needs support. These supplies are purchased from local vendors when possible. The Club is hosting a supply drive whereby members of the community can gather items throughout September to kick off the new year of school.

Laura spoke about some global grants as well. This year our Club is Finalizing the Nepal EMS Dispatch and Response Grant which will be saving lives through the creation of a much needed EMS system in rural Nepal. The current system is basically non-existent and this project involves a lot of coordination with Rotary Clubs here and in Nepal as well as with the Nepal Government. Paula helped greatly with this project as well. They are working on another grant to prevent violence against women in Nepal. Our Club also raised money to help purchase Medical Equipment for the battle against COVID over in Nepal. We also work with other Clubs in Oregon on various other projects.

Many other projects in the community have been supported by the Foundation including work with the Newberg Emergency Shelter, food boxes for families in the school district, Dictionaries for 3rd graders, $50,000 of annual scholarships, youth international exchange programs, youth orchestras, scouts, Peace Village, and more.

Thank you to everyone who contributed financially or with your valuable time on any and all amazing Rotary projects.

~ Today’s Program: Rotary Peace Fellowship Program by Florence Maher ~

Mike Introduced Florence: Florence is a junior social scientist with OECD Nuclear Energy Agency. She works to advance international cooperation on the human aspects of nuclear safety and improving gender balance in nuclear energy. Prior to her current position she was a 2018-2020 Rotary Peace Fellow at the International Christian University in Tokyo, Japan researching multi-stakeholder dialogue on policy processes. From 2011 to 2018 she was a career foreign service officer with the US Dept of State. She holds a Master’s degree in Public Policy and Social Research from the Intl Christian University and Bachelor’s Degrees in Economics and Political Science from Howard University in Washington D.C. Note: Mike also presented her with one of the new Rotary Peace Polos (pictured).

Florence first got to know Rotary a little over a decade ago after graduating from Howard University. She was working on a service project in Jamaica and needed a local partner to put in a computer lab at an orphanage. She partnered with a local Jamaican Rotary Club on that project. After graduating she served overseas for the Dept of State but knew she wanted to focus on professional aspects related to Peace. Thats when she found the opportunity to do the Rotary Peace Fellowship. She was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Las Vegas, Nevada and concluded her 2 year Peace Fellowship program in Tokyo Japan in 2020.

The Vision of the Fellowship is to contribute to sustainable peace by building a network of peace-builders and leaders dedicated to preventing and resolving conflict across the community. It is a big investment by Rotarians worldwide to support 8 Universities on 5 different continents that together educate about 100 Rotary Peace Fellows annually in Peace and Conflict Resolution. There are 5 Programs that do Master’s Degrees (Florence completed) and 2 that do a Certificate in peace and conflict studies which are a 3 month program.

Florence spent 2 years in Tokyo, Japan. First thing they did was language education in basic Japanese. The heart of the program was a 2 year academic program in Peace and International Development (which was all taught in English). The major emphasis in her program was based on the Thesis Research. The program also provided rich experiences outside of the classroom such as a trip they took to Hiroshima to learn about World War II and the bomb that was dropped. She also enjoyed her chance to spend 6 weeks in Mexico doing research on basic human rights in Mexico. She interviewed policy makers, activists, and business representatives about basic human rights in Mexico. She was looking at a policy process to bring together private and public sectors to come up with new government to come up with recommendations with how to shape the human rights regulations in Mexico. She also got an opportunity to meet with many different Rotary Clubs in Mexico. She also did a 3 month internship at the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency in France which she ultimately got a full time job and whom she currently works for. She also had a lot of engagement the local community in many awesome ways, as well as with various Japanese Rotary Clubs and Districts, attending many events and celebrations put on by those Japanese Rotary Clubs.

Florence highly recommended this program, especially for younger folks who are unsure of what to study after college, as it was an amazing experience. If you would like to learn more about Rotary Peace, you can reach out to Mike Caruso and/or attend the Club’s Peace Committee Meetings.

Stan: Had a brag as his socks were just like Paul’s. His shoe also still has some pancake batter on it from the Pancake Breakfast. He will wear that batter with pride.

Geoff: Geoff shared a story about his autistic son. His son came back home from the store to someone rifling through his trashcan with a hoodie and a flashlight. He was nervous to open his garage door and so he called the non-emergency line of the PD and they came by to check it out. Geoff was very proud of the responsible, rational way his son handled this situation.

Auggie: Noted that he accidentally walked out with his badge last week and is borrowing Spike’s. He reminded everyone as well that we always need volunteer Greeters.

Kathie: Went on a vacation to Crater Lake for the first time, many of her family members who have never been there before. She reminded everyone how important it is to plan out these excursions to make the most of them.

Dan K: Learned a lot about Paul sitting with him at the Installation Banquet and enjoyed their conversations. Additionally, had a “Rotarian in the Wild” sighting when he bumped into Geoff at a Blood Donation hosted by the City.

Matt: Went on vacation to Florida, doing some Fishing and fun at Disney World.

Shannon K: Noted that there are some very important things happening with the School Board, encouraging us to seek out more information. ~ Today’s Program: New Member Classification Talk by Daniel Roberts ~

Daniel Roberts, who you may remember from his being inducted into the club last week, is our newest member. He was born in Missouri but moved to The Dalles, Oregon where he graduated high school where he was Valedictorian. He then realized a greater challenge when he went to College at George Fox studying Engineering. He met his Wife during College in 2014, where he did a year abroad with her in Italy. They did a lot of romantic type adventures but only as friends until a bit later when her finally confinced her to marry him in 2017. He bounded around a bit at a few different companies until he realized engineering was not quite for him and went into Sales. He realized he wanted to make an impact with his career, eventually going down the self-employment route through real estate. Within months he had a major career change, got married, and found out they were having their first child. He how has a 3 year old, Elijah, and a 6 month old daughter Melody.

His friend convinced him to go into real estate and Daniel and his wife started the Joyful Roberts Group, which he does now with his mother Karen, as his wife has transitioned to staying home with the kids. They also started blogging, starting the Joyful Roberts Blog/Podcast. Daniel explained that their mission is finding Joy in real estate. They find joy in excellence of service, in the joy of giving, and the joy in relationships.

Daniel also shared about hos podcast “The Elpis Project”. Elpis is a Greek word for ‘hope’. In this podcast, Daniel interviews non-profits with the goal to learn and help the non-profits through spreading the word of their Good work and highlighting the joy of giving. To check out his project and learn more, visit https://www.theelpisproject.org/. Per the website: “There is good happening all around you. Our goal is to help you be aware of that good and help you get involved.” Dan invited us to give him recommendations on organizations that he may be able to interview in the future on this podcast.
