Guests: Yamhill County District Attorney [and today’s speaker] Brad Barry, and his Chief Deputy Attorney, Kate Lynch.
Leah Griffith provided today’s “Rotary Moment”…sharing some of her fond memories of her time with this club….and letting us know of her plans to join the Seaside Rotary Club….a new-for-her “extended family” that is part of the Rotary Experience.
Ralph Koozer reported the passing of his beloved wife, Gail….with memorial service to be in August.
With new Membership Chair, Kim Abraham, presiding, and ably assisted by newly-retired Newberg City Librarian, Leah Griffith, and officially witnessed by Club President Corey, two new Rotarians were added to our roster today: Brandy Penner and Connie Rice. Welcome, ladies! We look forward to hearing your Classification talks soon!
Jeff Lane reminded us of the need for more volunteers to signup for Pancake Breakfast duties…especially for Saturday early.
Curt Walker has breakfast tickets….encouraging their sales NOW..as pre-event sales proceeds go directly into our coffers…whereas event-gate sales will be split with Early Bird Rotary.
Spike Sumner announced that there is now an opening on the Club’s Foundation Board of Directors.
Walter Want did his usual stellar job of managing the DUCK today, collecting $31 from Rotarians present….including Yours Truly bragging on the Forest Grove Rotary’s 47th [!!] Annual Concours d’Elegance coming up on Sunday, July 21. This has become one of the Top 20 Concours globally. [French pronunciation lessons extra!]
Today’s program speaker, Yamhill County District Attorney, Brad Barry, eloquently gave us “chapter-and-verse” on his job & responsibilities as well as those of the County D.A. office.
There is one District Attorney [D.A.] in each of the State’s counties. The D.A.s derive their authority from, and represent, the State. As Chief of Deputy Attorneys, Kate Lynch has 11 deputies and an annual budget of $4M. Yamhill County’s D.A. Office is very “victim-centered”, and is involved heavily in child support issues/cases. The very nature of the system means they are very “reactive”…but are trying to be more “pro-active”. D.A. Barry spoke on: post-conviction restitution projects; an accountability diversion program; recidivism issues; sentencing guidelines; jail vs. prison; identification of “mental health” issues and ways to avoid jail and/or prison; does “dismiss the case” mean expunging case information from the individual’s record…or not?; Barry said there were several “works in progress”…..and as to the future….there is major concern that they are now prosecuting third generations in the same families…and what can the “system” do to break that cycle!
