~ Today’s Program: New Rotary Media and Public Relations Guidelines by Gary Stewart, D5100 AG~

Gary Stewart is part of the Newberg Early Birds Rotary Club and the District 5100 Assistant Governor. He has done amazing work and is invested personally and professionally in the livability and well being of our communities, rural especially. Gary reiterated his appreciation for our club and looks forward to continued cooperation between the two clubs as we are all working towards the same goals. He also highlighted that his term as AG is coming to an end and that he will be transitioning into a new role: the Chairman of the Learning and Development Committee for D5100 for a 3 year committment (formerly known as “District Trainer”).

Gary took us on a tour of some of the online resources available to us as Rotarians. He started with the district website: www.isrotaryforyou.com. He highlighted that you can see in the “Events” tab, that last weekend and this weekend is the Spring Training digital conference. NOTE: Gary pointed out that everyone will have an opportunity to learn even if they were unable to attend as these training webinars are all being recorded and will soon be made available for everyone. You can also see resources and other Events happening throughout the District.

Gary also highlighted the International Club Site www.myrotary.com. The Rotary International Convention this year will be virtual AND available to all of us virtually (a rare opportunity that we should all consider checking out). This is a great chance to learn, be insprired, and get involved. This is usually including a lot of travel time and money to attend, so this is an amazing opportunity for some of us who may have time or money constraints to be able to attend. It is scheduled to be over 4 days June 12-16 broken up into different learning opportunities. He also mentioned that you can browse the tab “Learning and Resources” with information available about EVERYTHING Rotary, from current leadership, to roles within clubs, to history, to interact, to starting new clubs, etc. Go into that Learning Center and play around. There are opportunites to expand and educate beyond just Rotary, but topics that can directly impact your professional skills for FREE. Courses on speaking, leading, collaboration, etc. (Did I say FREE? It’s FREE.)

Another resource highlighted was DacDB: You can go to www.dacdb.com to see more information about your Club including the Club Roster and contact info for other members.

Polly, the new Executive Director of the Newberg Downtown Coalition is an energetic professional and member of the community who has a history community volunteerism in many forms including having served on the Newberg School Board.

The Newberg Downtown Coalition (NDC) includes a geographic proximity that includes the downtown area (2nd street to the Chehalem Cultural Center, and from River street to Harrison). It is a non-profit organization that is funded through grants, donations and volunteerism. The NDC was created 10 years ago and seeks to promote the downtown area through a focus on the physical assets of the downtown area as well as the people and business owners. The NDC strives to keep the downtown area vibrant, refreshed, and a place for community gathering and business.

Some examples of what they have helped accomplish includes grants for revitalizing the facade of several historic buildings including Chapters Books as well as the Cameo Theatre. They also do work in promotion of Tourism to Newberg and more specifically the Downtown Area. They try to Attract new business and supporting existing businesses through coordination of promotions, events, and collaboration with owners, with the City, and with the Chamber. They have spearheaded and participated in different committees and events aimed at improving and bringing people downtown including First Fridays Art Walk, Wednesday Farmers Markets, Holiday Markets, Light-up Newberg and other events and committees. Polly also mentioned that you can volunteer at the Wednesday Market, which Michelle and Shannon K both had volunteered at last Fall and said it was a LOT of fun.
