Service ProjectsCOMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT DIRECTOR: Jan Paquette
Newberg Noon Rotary participates in various projects that benefit the community and surrounding areas. Below is a brief listing of the 2008-09 ongoing projects:
ENVIRONMENTAL / HESS CREEK PROJECTS: Steve Johnson, Chair The Hess Creek Project is a combined effort between George Fox University and Newberg Rotary Clubs. The section of historic Hess Creek involved in this clean up and native habitat restoration project runs through the University’s property boundaries; the goal is to restore this section to it’s natural state and create a “walking parkway” for the community and its visitors. Newberg Rotary provides volunteer labor for monthly “work days” to provide clean up, botanist labor assistance, and assist in the various tasks of the project to ensure it’s overall success. Other environmental projects in our community are also slated throughout the year. Visit this site for updates on other projects.
SENIOR MEALS: Barbara Wynne-Oliver, Chair Each first Tuesday of the month, Noon Club Rotarians bustle about the Chehalem Valley Senior Center preparing the facility’s dining room, heating pre-prepared meals, and serving up to 36 seniors a sit-down hot lunches. The fun doesn’t stop there! Rotarians also clean the facility after lunch has been served, draw straws for kitchen duty (washing pots and pans, and cleaning the kitchen) and prep transport meals for the Meals on Wheels program. Along with lunch service, Rotarians provide brief companionship, conversation, and put smiles on the faces of seniors who enjoy lunch at SVSC.
HOLIDAY SERVICE PROJECT: Kelly Hagglund, Chair Each holiday season Newberg Noon Rotary brings a little holiday cheer to area homebound residents. Along with a personal visit to each recipient, the club purchases and delivers up to Holiday Poinsettias to make the holidays a little brighter for some.
NEWBERG OLD FASHIONED FESTIVAL: Mike Caruso, Chair Newberg Noon Rotary assists the Newberg Old Fashioned Festival Planning Committee with their annual celebration by providing a committee to address the festival’s “areas of need.” These range from providing labor and event manpower during this four-day festival, sponsor fund raising, marketing, and assisting in emergency issues on a “call to need” basis.
DICTIONARY PROJECT: Walter Want, Chair Newberg Noon Rotary purchases and distributes approximately 475 to area third graders. This service project includes preparing dictionaries with a Rotary Four-Way Test on inside covers and personally visiting each third grade classroom in the Newberg area (public and private schools) to one dictionary give free of charge to each child. |
