Jambo! (Swahili for hello)  My name is Grace Kuto. My husband, Paul and I were born and raised in rural Kenya. We have lived in the Portland, Oregon area since the mid-1970’s.  I founded the Harambee Center in 1995 as a bridge between the Pacific Northwest and her village in Kenya. The Harambee non-profit focuses on education, cultural exchange programs, and self-sustainable projects, including micro-credit, in Africa.

Through christian love, we are inspired to foster lasting relationships through philanthropic and cultural exchange experiences between people from the U.S.A. and rural communities in Kenya to impact human understanding and the quality of life for those involved for generations to come through self-sustainable projects especially by women, youth, and their families.

So many life transforming stories have been shared by volunteers at Chwele and those who have visited Chwele since we started working there back in 1994. Many of you in the Pacific Northwest region have heard these stories from us personally, and now with the wonders of technology, we can finally share them with so many others around the world!
